Vlogger Jim Chapman takes us through the life of vloggers from their prospective with a new documentary, Rise Of The Superstar Vloggers produced by the BBC3. Chapman meets with the biggest social influencer vloggers across the world including; Tyler Oakley, KSI, Ingrid Nilsen, Zoella and Alfie Deyes. They discuss the vloggers ups and downs of being a famous Internet social star.
Chapman introduces us to ordinary people, mostly young, who decide to take bold steps by putting their everyday lives on broadcast. These vloggers start with the ideal notice to create videos for either a laugh, do-it-yourself or find new friends who will be supportive towards their creative goal. The common thread to each of their success is being authentic on top of devoting numerous hours in creating the best content. Once they find their voice, millions of dedicated viewers will flock to their channels. And in return, a social influencer is born.
The vloggers speak openly to Chapman about the trappings from their due success. The social stars are called upon for product endorsements, book deals, tours and red carpet events. While all these new experiences are exciting for ordinary people, the vloggers slowly realizes their privacies are diminishing and the new responsibilities they owe to their fans. Tyler Oakley understands his new power and described it as, “a missed opportunity if you don’t realize that you might be a role model.” Oakley is one of the top vloggers and has been invited to the White House to discuss health policy. He vlogs about popular culture and LBGTQ issues.
Chapman explores the topic of “confessional videos” and the power they hold to the viewers. These types of videos have the most views ranging in the multi-millions. He spent time with vlogger Ingrid Nilsen to speak about her “Coming Out” video. Nilsen created a video letting her fans in on her hidden secret of being Gay. Her fans were supportive and responded with positive comments. The “Coming Out” video received close to 14 million views. Chapman shares his own personal experience in regard to his father. His sisters Sam and Nic created a confessional video of their own with their mom discussing spousal abuse. Confessional videos can have it downfalls. Sharing too many details on your private life can be risky. What a vlogger chooses to upload, can define them for the good or the bad. But at the end, hopefully, their voice is heard and understood.
“Traditional media is a gatekeeper on what you can see and connect with. Now with YouTube, anyone who wants his or her voice to be heard, at least now has a platform” says Tyler Oakley. “The Internet is the perfect place for this behavior.”
